I went to the dentist last week. Not something I
really look forward to, but the visit is a part of taking good care of myself.
I had a less than loving dentist when I was a kid and pain and fear was often
involved in my childhood visits. So for a long time I associated fear with the
dentist, even after becoming an adult and finding an incredibly compassionate
dentist.
The fear felt automatic – as if I had no control
over it. As soon as I knew I had a visit, I started to fear. By the time I
actually got to the dentist’s office, I had worked myself up so much that I was
hyper alert and stressed.
My dentist noticed my anxiety (it was a little
hard to miss) and came up with some solutions. Surprise, I was not the only
person who has dental anxiety. I know that may sound silly, but it really was
an epiphany moment for me. I thought I was the only one who was so “weird”
(yes, I was judging myself) about a little dentist visit.
We tried different things until I was finally
comfortable. And if you experience any dental anxiety, I encourage you to talk
to your dentist. I found that some things worked for me and some things did
not, so it is a personal and unique solution for all of us – just like
everything in life.
My dentist has loving photos, music, sayings – all
around his office. And beautiful posters on the ceiling that you can look at
while being worked on. There was a new one this visit that I really loved (and
thought it applied to so many situations). A Chinese proverb.
“Sometimes we are not where we want to be, but
where we need to be.”
Stepping away from our fears means to take charge
and to let go at the same time. I let go of the painful memories – I
disconnected them from my current experiences. I understood that my past
memories cannot hurt me now. Then I tried new things until I found what works
for me. I was patient with myself and allowed myself to feel good about
sometimes being not where I wanted to be.
Now I allow myself to feel great about taking
really good care of myself. We can all look at our fears honestly and meet them
with loving solutions.
